Professor Ian McHale

Ian’s core role within the Association of Sporting Directors (ASD) relates to Data & Insight and includes:

  • Leading the creation of research articles/content concerning analytics and data.
  • Leading the process to ensure the quality and suitability of content shared with members.
  • To contribute to content for website, events and courses ran by the ASD, particularly in relation to player recruitment and strategy.

Outside of this, Ian is Professor of Sports Analytics at the University of Liverpool Management School. Ian’s research focusses on using statistical models for rating players, forecasting results, and understanding more about various aspects of sport. Ian has consulted with, amongst others, football clubs, the Premier League, the Press Association, and several bookmakers. In 2005, Ian created the EA SPORTS Player Performance Indicator, the official player ratings system of the Barclays Premier League. Ian was founding Chair of the Royal Statistical Society’s Statistics in Sport Section.
