Rob supports the professional development programme of the Association of Sporting Directors through creating and inviting high quality content and inviting articles which can enhance our field, as part of his broader knowledge exchange and research role.
Rob has been involved in the Business of Sport since 1998 and has presented on the financial and governance issues facing sport since 2002. His teaching has taken him all over the world, delivering to students in the UK, Norway, Luxembourg, Spain, Singapore and China. His main teaching and research interests are in the finance and economics of sport and leisure and his PhD focussed on the factors affecting financial performance in professional team sport. Rob is an active researcher and has published five books; ‘Finance for sport and leisure managers: An introduction’, ‘Managing Sport Finance’, ‘Sport Management; The Basics’, ‘Managing and Developing Community Sport’ and ‘The Handbook of Sport Governance’; numerous chapters on finance and financial management in sport and a number of peer reviewed journal articles. His experience also extends to involvement in major contracted research projects including the economic impact assessments of major sport events such as the London Marathon, sponsorship perceptions at the F1 British Grand Prix and environmental impacts at the Women’s Rugby World Cup.
Rob was appointed to the role of Head of Department in the Sheffield Business School in May 2019 and has held a variety of leadership roles in Higher Education. Prior to a moving into a Subject Group Leader role with the Academy of Sport and Physical Activity he was responsible for the strategic management of the an external relations portfolio which included recruitment activity, managing and enhancing sport partnerships to provide volunteer internship positions, the marketing and communications strategy and new business development. As a subject head, he was responsible for the delivery of the Sport Business Management programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level, at home and with a partner University in Hong Kong. Rob now leads a team of 58 academic staff to ensure an outstanding student experience, market leading delivery and strong student recruitment.
Rob’s research and knowledge exchange experience fuels his involvement with media agencies and he is a regular commentator and panellist for national and international broadcasts such as BBC TV, Al Jazeera and ESPN, on national radio broadcasts such as Radio 5live and Talk Sport and in print with the Wall Street Journal, Times, Daily Telegraph, FT and Der Speigel. A key function of his work here is to provide a detailed, yet user friendly analysis, on the financial implications of a variety of scenarios on sport, and football in particular. This work often bridges the gap between academic practice and the public.
His research interests extend to the financial health of sport organisations; Economic decision making in professional sport; The ownership structure of professional sport teams; Accounting and finance in a sporting context; Performance measurement and organisational performance in professional sport teams; Corporate Social Responsibility in, and through, sport; and Governance in professional team sports.
